2011 Land Rover Freelander 2 HSE SD4 & SE SD4: 2.2-litre 4-cylinder turbo diesel. Four-Wheel Drive system: Full time 4 wheel drive with Haldex rear axle differential. Both FL1 up to Series 4 - and the First FL2's had the viscous coupling unit (VCU). Its a sealed unit on the prop shaft that supports the four wheel drive function of a Freelander. All Freelander 1 models have a viscous coupling unit (unless the prop shaft has been removed, rendering the Freelander a two wheel drive vehicle). Land Rover's entry model, the Freelander 2, is a rugged, hardy little unit with the qualities of a mountain goat.

The Land Rover Freelander is a three- or five-door, five passenger compact SUV that was manufactured and marketed by Land Rover[1] for 17 years, in both two-wheel and four-wheel drive versions across two generations, from 1997 to 2015. The second generation was sold from 2007–2015 in North America and The Middle East as the LR2 and in Europe as the Freelander 2.

After having built exclusively body-on-frame 4WD vehicles for half a century, the first generation Freelander was the brand's first model to use monocoque (unibody) structures,[2] and was offered in three- and five-door body options, including a semi soft-top. The second generation (from 2006) dropped all two-door options, leaving only a five-door stationwagon-like body, and – after 62 years – became the brand's first ever to offer a two-wheel drive option (as of 2010).

After a five-year hiatus, the two-door Freelanders were succeeded by the two-door versions of the Range Rover Evoque in 2011, and the five-door generation 2 was replaced by the Discovery Sport in 2015.[3]

If the vehicle is operating in slippy conditions and one of the front wheels starts tolose traction, the difference between the front and rear propshaft speeds is sensed by theViscous Coupling. The instant this happens, drive is progressively split as requiredbetween front and rear axles to maintain forward motion.

How it works.

Color palette instagram. The Freelander 1.8 petrol is fitted with the conventional 5-speed PG1 gearbox. TheFreelander does not have a separate transfer box splitting the power from front to rear.

Instead, it has an Intermediate Reduction Drive unit bolted onto the gearbox where theFinal Drive unit is located. This reduces the ratios by a factor of 1.458 to giverelatively lower gearing, and also rotates the drive through 90 degrees to the rear axle,via the Viscous Coupling. This gives the benefits of lighter weight and reducedtransmission noise.

The Intermediate Reduction Drive

The IRD incorporates a differential assembly, a primary and secondary helical spur geartrain, and a hypoid gear set. It replaces the traditional transfer unit and performs 3main tasks:

  • Reduces the gear ratios of the manual gearbox by 1.458 to the front wheels via the helical spur gear train.
  • Rotates the drive through 90 degrees to drive the propshaft and rear wheels via the hypoid gear set.
  • In conjunction with the Viscous Coupling, gives the vehicle an automatically activated four wheel drive system without any extra levers.

The Viscous Coupling

The concept of the Viscous Coupling Unit (VCU), introduced on Classic Range Rover, wasa world first for Land Rover. The VCU has been colloquially described as a 'tin oftreacle with discs in it'. It is a canister between the front and rear propshafts,filled with a silicone fluid sandwiched between steel plates. The fluid has thecharacteristic of increasing its viscosity when stirred and heated.

Freelander 2 Door

When the wheels on the front axle start to lose traction, they cause the front and rearpropshafts to rotate at different speeds to each other. This makes the discs in the VCUrotate at different speeds, which in turn causes a rise in temperature, progressivelylocking the discs together. This effectively starts to couple the front and rearpropshafts, eventually dividing torque equally between front and rear axles to maintaintraction and control. The response is almost instantaneous, and undetectable by thedriver.

As the front wheels regain traction, the temperature in the VCU drops, the viscosity ofthe fluid returns to its original level, and the propshafts are unlocked, reverting tonormal drive mode.

Through this ingenious system, the Freelander is able to give car like handling innormal conditions, and extremely good performance in adverse or off-road conditions,without the driver having to use additional controls.
